Erika Deák Gallery

Since its foundation in 1998, Erika Deák Gallery has represented progressive art in Hungary, often collaborating with artists from abroad. He represented such famous artists as Levente Baranyai, János Fajó, Martin Lukáč and József Csató. In addition to painting and sculpture, the gallery also works with photography and video art.

József Csató's paintings teeter on the border between the figurative and the abstract. His biomorphic, amoeba-like forms are one moment interpreted as abstract forms, then suddenly we see them as real entities on the canvas. His images make us believe what we see is familiar, then the longer we look at them the more uncertain we become about our own knowledge.
The design of the exhibition is inspired by the characteristic shapes and colours of Csató. The observing spray-painted eyes, which also appear in the painter's paintings, are given a prominent role.
The works in the artist's exhibition show the painter's private spaces in a surreal world of organic forms. The images transform the gallery spaces into an imaginary apartment interior, with the artist consciously playing on the ambivalence of spaces and forms. The boundaries between living room, bedroom and garden are sometimes sharp, sometimes blurred.
Different patterns and colours have been used in different online materials, referring to the painter's rich and varied palette of motifs.
One of the special highlights of the exhibition was the opening by Marcell Rév, a cinematographer who has recently achieved many international successes.
